Rambling on: its raining again

Saturday, October 02, 2004

its raining again

what a day it's been - the met report turns out to be accurate for a change - woke up to find the living room lights on and some commotion - it was saturday morning but hearing the kids so early i thought they were getting dressed for school - well the fact of the matter was that it was dark outside due to overcast skies and it has been raining since early morning

the cyclone in the arabian sea has brought welcome change & the weather has turned cooler. the afternoon, things get even better, the bbc had a 50 minute documentary on billie holiday which was a treat - will have to find her tape - its really been ages .....

Click on the beck in the middle of the page and the song list opens up. Goes well with rainy weather

loved your link - have saved it..thanks...added this to the list of things i have to buy this weekend..was pretty desperate last week to find new stuff, and if i do not find cake, beck looks like a solid choice..BTW, you did not give me a specific track to listen to so have listened to most of them.."end of the day" hmmm don't know about rain but this is good music to have a well deserved drink at the end of the week..:)

and if the above comments has'nt caused a dent in my reputation then you would hate me for sure for my "rain recommendation", rain being a an uplifting experience for us in Karachi....so give this track a try and i would not blame you if hate me for recommending another juvenile ballady pakistan track :) (did a review of the album on my blog something that I am embarrased about for reasons i am not quite certain)

well the track is "bheegi ratain" on the following link for this week's recommendation on a rain song....

hmmm, this is strange, your blog has the same effect on me - cheering me up on a crappy day - shit piling up on my desk & landmines blowing in my face and you come up with these commenta...so thanks..

beck and cake are getting me all excited about my next trip to the music store - can you believe i bought frank zappa last week, don't know what i was thinking but my morning drives are interesting to say the least. i am only mentioning frank zappa as an example of how desperate i am - desperate for change - to try something new, getting sick and tired of going back to the basics.

as for acrimonious breakup between Atif (lead singer) and Gohar (guitar/creative) of the now defunct JAL-THE BAND, you are right - one does get distracted from the music but I guess greed got to them .....but both these guys are coming out with their albums & from what I have listened to so far (the solo album of Atif) if you do yourself (and myself) the secret pleasure of listening to popish or poopish (my invention :) songs, then Atif is alright..will get back to you when i meet some success with beck or cake...cheers Naveed

I tried Atif - but - could not listen to the whole thing without laughing (because of your fears). Will have to try again on some serious day. I think he was good - voice a little young (of course he is) - a little 'kacha pukka' if you know what I mean. Will try again

yes, he is kacha pukka and he is a bacha which is why i think one cannot listen to this crap for a long stretch ....does not stimulate you at all mentally...music has to be much more than that...

Okay I am an airhead. I realized you had asked what I thought of Mutations (on my blog) and I told you the names of two tracks??? What was I thinking? I will be listening to it today and hopefully can give you a coherent answer by tomorrow.

sure ...take your time...and i am sure listening to it will be a unique experience as it always is when you brush off the dust of old record and put them on..but i just need your gut feel on the album nothing like a review of anything because i gave it a listen on amazon and it sounds pretty much like the link that you sent me earlier...regards .....Naveed

Not just me reporting ,I got my friend and coworker Brent to opine as well.I also listened to the Amazon clips of Mutations to see where you were coming from. I do listen to Mutations fairly regulary because it is one of my all time favorites, however, today conducted a controlled experiment by listeneing to both albums back to back. Window washers hanging outside my window making bizarre noises all this time. Ready to do a power point pitch on this.
The albums are similar in that they both have slower tempo songs and the lyrics mostly make sense (this does not always happen with beck).Sea change is a totally sad album and there is no genre switching.Mutations has blues, bossa nova, folk. We both agree that Mutations is his best work so far(while researching today, I learned that it was created in just two weeks!)
So, my gut feeling? This is great.
Brent also pointed me to a good music site, allmusic.com which seemed to have full song clips. I did not try it as I did not want to sign up for it at work. The Amazon clips did make the two seem similar.
Remember though, as far as I am concerned, Beck walks on water. There is nothing he does that I do not like.
I would be hesitant recommending Odelay or Mellow gold to you though - they just don't seem appropriate for someone with mature tastes ;) for me, they rock!
Okay, back to my lunch, can you believe I am eating something called 'Crabby soup'? I will spare you the details of what it looks like (bleh).

One similarity that should please you, neither album got much ,if any, air time on the radio.

who u calling "mature"...no name calling mister? ok? :) i have done a goddamn review of atif aslam for pete sake. how could i be "mature"? :) and if it was sarcasm on your part..well then it that case.....well in that case it is ok cuz i am only confused at what i like..which again is ok as one can ..i find myself loving some dance tracks because i love seeing my daughter learning her dance moves to them

more on my trip to the music store on my blog...cheers Naveed

(PS : have dared to call you "mister" ...am assuming that you are one cuz i have not seen anything on your blog to suggest think otherwise)

How come most of our conversations degenerate like this?
Call me whatever you want and you are free to like whatever you like -I am going to find that blog you are so ashamed of so I can use it later ( black mail or whatever):)
If we are going to be silly, then let me tell you the biggest difference in the two albums - Mutations is black and Sea Change is a fuschia color....

i would like to disown any comment or blog posted yesterday on account of the amount of shit i had had ....:) and it seems highly unlikely that i would know the difference between black and fuschia cuz the music stores here are full of so much crap....thought you would read my next blog and know what i mean but blogger has again not posted my blog...so let me try again and you will know....cheers Naveed

Chill!
I was just razzing you. I am just as bad.It is just so funny that when I see your comments to other bloggers, you guys are so polite to each other; I feel I have "lowered" the tone of your blog;)
Sorry about your horrid day. Here it is 3:45 am and I can't sleep. Oh, well - it is Friday.
