Let the music play - Part 3
writing about music is taking me back to faiz and thank God someone who borrowed my entire urdu poetry collection returned it earlier in the week - nuskha hayay vafa which is concise faiz collection is back to its usual place
so i am relaxing reading faiz and i see a video by ahmed jahanzeb in which he has sporting a new hairstyle lending his crappy voice to one of my faiz favourites & i really do not understand the video for this one, he is riding at the back of limo singing this ghazal...what exactly has gone wrong with this guy, if you cannot carry a tune then your hair is surely not going to rescue you would it
he has covered "aap kee yaad aatee rahee raat bhar" which is faiz's tribute to makhdoom
so here is makhdoom's version first
aap kee yaad, aatee rahee raatabhar
chashme-nam muskuraatee rahee raatabhar
raatabhar dard kee shammaa jaltee rahee
gam kee lau tharatharaatee rahee raatabhar
baasuree kee sureelee suhaanee sadaa
yaad ban ban ke aatee rahee raatabhar
yaad ka chaand dil mein utarate rahe
chaandanee jagamagaatee rahee raatabhar
koee diwaanaa galiyon mein phirtaa rahaa
koee aawaaz aatee rahee raatabhar
Faiz's tribute to Makhdoom from his mairay dil mairay musafir is as follows
aap kee yaad aatee rahee raat bhar
chandini dil dukhaatee rahee raat bhar
gaah jaltee hoee gaah bukhtee hoee
sham-e-ghum jhilmilaatee rahee raat bhar
koee khushboo badaltee rahee pairahan
koee tasweer gaatee rahee rahee raat bhar
phir saba saayaa-ay shakh-e-gul kay talay
koee qisaa sunatee rahee raat bhar
jo naa aayaa ussaay koee zanjeer-ay dar
har sadaa par bulatee rahee raat bhar
aik umeed say dil behaltaa raha
aik tamanaa sataatee rahee raat bhar
